High Tea at Hockham Hall - July 11th 2010

At the end of June, Jo Connolly (Churchwarden of Holy Trinity Church) and Chris Wiltshire had a discussion about fundraising for the Church.  The upshot of this 'little chat' was that Chris generously offered the use of the marquee that he had arranged for the wedding reception of his daughter Sarah to Sam Peck on Saturday 10th July, the marquee was due to be dismantled on Monday 12th, so the date for the Tea Party was fixed for Sunday 11th July!

So a Vintage Tea Party with Jazz Band was arranged, advertised and catered for in just three short weeks.  Jo's daughter Suzy provided the vintage crockery, lots of people in the village made cakes, a team of sandwich makers produced an awesome output and large teapots and hot water urns were set up.  The all important Jazz was provided by Phil Brook and the Pete Oxborough quartet.

The day dawned warm and sunny and the hours seem to race toward five o'clock as the marquee was 'redressed' and made ready.  (The event was planned as High Tea as it took place at the traditional English teatime, and was timed to accommodate folk wanting to watch the two major world sporting fixtures on the television: The Grand Prix at 15.00 and The World Cup Final in South Africa - kick off 19.30).

Between 130 - 150 people put on their Sunday best and came along to eat, drink tea, natter, walk around the grounds of the Hall, listen to the music and watch the children play.  It was a very relaxed and enjoyable event, after which 30 guests visited the church to see flowers from the wedding, where they were welcomed by the Verger John Unsworth.

A profit of £400 was donated to Holy Trinity Church, where exciting things are happening, but that's another story!
